Afghanistan has been ranked as one of the top five most corrupt nations on earth, with officials and foreign contractors benefiting from the siphoning away of hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid.
For the people, bribery has become a way of life as the average Afghan is said to spend $156 per year on illegal payments. The government of Hamid Karzai, Afghan president, blames uncontrolled foreign spending on the risings costs associated with daily life in Afghanistan.
